Preparation

One of the things we've learned over the last few years is that whatever way you look at them, these tours are tough. Every year we're reminded about that. Don't get misled by what seems like short distances. Factor in altitude, road conditions, a change of diet and temperature, long climbs and that 'short' day starts to feel far from it. Unless you've toured before or completed a multi-day event, it's easy to underestimate what it's like to spend several hours in the saddle, day in, day out. Getting as much riding in before the trip will help you enjoy the trip more. Commuting and weekend tours are great for base milegeage. We'd recommend signing up with a few of the 'Enduro' mtb events around the country to remind yourself what it feels like to put in some long hours, over a hard day of riding, across rough terrain. Cyclosportives and audax events will also stand you in good stead. Don't get us wrong. The trips aren't t too tough. But they will make you work for your dinner...
